Tinnitus refers to the subjective awareness of sounds in the ears or inside the head when there is no outside sound source.

For many people it can be extremely distressing, affecting concentration during daily activities and even disturbing restful sleep. Most commonly it is due to “misfiring” of damaged microscopic sensory hair cells inside the inner ear. It may be a feature of a specific ear condition that can be treated medically.

If you wish to book an appointment with an ear consultant, please contact our parent company, The Harley Street ENT Clinic, to see a specialist.

Tinnitus devices

If the patient has a hearing impairment, then quite often using a digital hearing aid is sufficient. When the hearing is restored to near normal levels by the hearing aid, the tinnitus is very often less intrusive.

Alternatively, if the hearing is satisfactory, fitting a masking device to cancel out the offending sounds can be helpful. We have a range of such tinnitus devices available.

Other patients may benefit from psychological counselling, often referred to as Tinnitus Retraining Therapy.
